A new automated coffee shop called coffee x is opening up in San Francisco, offering customers a glimpse of the future. Instead of a human barista, the cafe has a series of robots that will brew and serve up your favorite drink in a matter of seconds.
The robots can reproduce a recipe with mechanical exactitude, and they can log customer preferences. However, it’s not clear whether they can deliver the same emotional connection that a human-staffed cafe can provide.
The cafe is the latest in a growing movement of automated eateries that are popping up across the country. Some of these businesses have been criticized for impeding on jobs that could be filled by humans, but Cafe X says it focuses on working alongside technology rather than replacing it. A human Café X specialist is always on-site to take orders via app or kiosk and give instructions to the robotic baristas.
Cafe X has raised $5.1 million in two prior rounds of venture funding, including an investment from Silicon Valley investor and commentator Jason Calacanis. The company has two locations in the San Francisco area.
The most popular order at the automated coffee shop is a chai latte with dairy-free milk, which can be made in about 15 seconds. A single order contains about 75mg of caffeine, which is a fairly small amount compared to the 400-plusmg of caffeine found in a standard cup of joe from a traditional café. The chai latte also comes with a little bit of protein, which can help mitigate the blood sugar drop that caffeine causes and prevent the release of stress hormones.
