Single-serve coffee brewers like Keurig have become wildly popular, with a variety of different flavors available. But many consumers have been confused about what to call these convenient brewing options: pods or k cups?
A Pod and a K-Cup are Not the Same Thing!
While both coffee pods and K-Cups are designed to be single-serve coffee solutions, their differences mean they offer completely different brewing experiences. It’s important to know the difference between these two types of brewing systems before choosing one to suit your needs and budget.
Pods are a round, flat and cup-like package that contains ground coffee wrapped in filter paper. It’s a simple design that allows them to be transported easily.
K-Cups, on the other hand, are small plastic cups filled with about 10 grams of ground coffee and topped with a foil lid. They were originally patented by Keurig and are currently only compatible with their brewers. However, since their patents expired, multiple companies have started producing K-Cups for Keurig brewers, and consumers are quickly circumventing this system to purchase these cups.
