Coffee County, Alabama – History and Information

Coffee County is an unincorporated county located in the eastern portion of the U.S. State of Alabama. It is bordered by Mississippi and runs along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. As of the 2021 U.S. Census, the population was 49,049. Its county seat is Elba. Its name comes from General John Coffee, who made his claim to the southernmost territory in the country.

The name of Coffee County traces its origins to when it became a part of the State of Alabama and later became a part of Mississippi. It was under military rule during the American Civil War. In the early days of its existence as a county, it was known for its cotton plantations and, later, for its wealth in trade. Its name thus came from “coffee tree,” which is what the plant was called at that time.

Today, there are many textile mills located in and around Coffee County. These include cottonseed farms, boy’s clubs, roping and tobacco production industries. There are also coal mines and limestone deposits around Coffee County. Coffee County is also noted for the Black Mountain Coffee, which it exports to neighboring states. Many coffee drinkers in Alabama know it as Big Black. The coffee grown in Coffee County is the highest quality coffee in the world.

As of this writing, there is no limit on the number of variations of the name Coffee County. In fact, there have been several proposed names such as Coffee Creek, Coffee Run, Coffee Rock. Because of this, some consider Coffee County to be synonymous with confusion. It is sometimes referred to as “Coffee Rocks.”

Coffee County is considered to be the second largest economy in Baldwin County after Mobile. Mobile is the county seat of the city of Baldwin. Coffee County is approximately two hundred and fifty square miles in size. It is bordered by the Tufleyseee River to the west, the Mobile River to the north and the Mobile River to the east. It is a coastal county with a central area along the Gulf of Mexico.

The name Coffee is thought to be derived from a Spanish word which meant black. Other theories suggest that the name was created because of the abundance of coffee plantations in the area. No matter what the reason was for the name, Coffee County, AL is proud of its history. Many of its residents are the alma mater of those from Mobile and its surrounding areas.
