Coffee County is in southeastern Alabama and is named for General John Coffee. It was carved out of the western portion of Dale County in 1841 and is bordered to the north by Pike County, to the east by Houston County, to the south by Geneva County and Covington and Crenshaw Counties, and to the west by the Pea River. The county seat is Elba. The Pea River, the largest tributary of the Choctawhatchee River, runs from north to south in the center of the county. Several smaller tributaries, including Double Bridges, Tight Eye, Beaverdam, Whitewater, Big, and Steep Head creeks, also run through the county. Interstate 84, running east-west in the southern part of the county, is the main transportation route.
Agriculture and manufacturing are the major economic drivers in Coffee County. The county is one of the leading producers in poultry and peanut processing. It is also home to Fort Rucker, the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. Enterprise is the largest city in the county. The county’s workforce is skilled in aircraft maintenance, and it is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States.
